This is awful. Just laying on the ground-it's like we don't care, but some of us really do.

Hi Karen! Just checking in to see how things are going as your Build Day approaches. Will you still be building on July 9th? I'd love to hear any recent developments. As always, let me know if there's anything I can do to help!

Hello Nate,
It took me a good month to get over 4-5 months of non-stop fundraising. YES! we made our goal and then some. First, as a result of all the PR from the Kaboom contest, we received outside donations. Through the PR, Pilchuck Constructions volunteered their professional services of demolition / removal, site prep. This will save us approx. $13,000 off the projected budget. We held a community pep rally & school walk a thon in April and then we topped it off w/ a Washington Wine tasting event (along w/ live auction, fund a need auction and dessert dash) in May. We had a local foundation donate a significant amount of money. All these efforts have resulted in meeting our goal. In addition, we are adding park benches and new basketball hoops (which were not part of the initial plan). The playground will go under construction this summer and we will have a ribbon cutting when school starts. I get to take some time off. School is out today (we are late in the PNW) and it is FINALLY sunny and a balmy 73 degrees. Yeeha! When I get some time, I will upload photos of our events for folks to see. Both were a complete blast for the community and very rewarding for both me and Candy. Sincerely, Karen

Wow Karen! It's great to hear about the success you've had since the contest, and I'm so happy that you have reached (and even surpassed!) your fundraising goal. It's also great to hear the positive influence that the contest had on your project, as difficult as it was, and even though you didn't win. It's fantastic that you have been able to engage your community at such a high level, and I absolutely love this picture of you, the Mayor, the Principal, and Candy! Who will be installing your playground? Do you have the design yet? I would love to see it if/when you do!

Although we ended up in 4th place, we have so much to be proud of and thankful for. This has been so much more than a voting contest. I am proud that we ran a PR campaign w/ integrity. It was great community effort. Thank EVERYBODY so much for all your support.
Now we can all relax (well, maybe not me:)- no more pesty e-mails and postings. Much thanks!

I have to say a BIG 'THANK YOU' to all that helped out w/ this event! The community (parents and kids) seemed to all have a good time AND we made approximately $7,500 from the auction, concessions and bingo combined. So, again - Thanks! So good to see our community rally together to get the playground built for the students and the neighborhood.

OMG! What a complete hoot! King 5 did such an excellent news coverage on our grassroots project. The kids were following the camera man around like he was the Pied Piper. Our story aired on the 6:30pm news on Friday night. How hilarious, after the story, they tied in our rusty equipment into the weather - RAIN. Imagine that in Seattle? We will get a DVD of the story... Will definitely send a copy to Kaboom. We are So, so appreciative of the PR opportunity that Kaboom's video project has provided to us. I uploaded pictures of the news shooting. Check out our photos!

I requested my Westgate video entry run 4 more times this Saturday morning.
Request Approved!!!
See anchor Meg Coyle introduce the video 4 additional times... 6am, 7am, 8am, 9am, shows with more encouragement for viewers to vote every day!!
At a guess the last chance to see live on air will be 9:40am providing no new breaking stories.
Before the KING coverage yesterday we were falling behind by 500 votes or so, after the coverage we gained bigtime and sneaked back into the lead by just a few votes!...
With the additional coverage this Saturday morning we can hope for Westgate to pull far ahead!!!
Keep the reminders out for everybody to vote every day!!

I noticed this morning that we are on the top 5. I just want to say to everyone thank you because the whole Westgate community has step up to the challenge and putting all their efforts and resources together to make this playground a reality. Thanks to Karen and Candy for all their hard work, without you two, this wouldn't be as successful as it's been.

Thanks Adriana, This has been a long, hard road w/ multiple community fundraiser & a year of grant writing. Believe me... I had my doubts that we would ever get to this 'happy' place where our playground is within our reach. Thanks so much to Kaboom for this opportunity to be in the spotlight. The boost has been tremendous and a wonderful opportunity to bring our community together.

Tomorrow, Candy Gaul and Robert Baumgartner will make a prsentation to Edmonds City Council to ask for matching funds of $25,000. We anticipate that all will go well; hence I have prematurely updated our status funds raised to $60,000. This means only $30,000 left to go! Keep your fingers crossed.

It's going to be so easy to talk about our project with all this excitement! It's amazing to see how building a playground and neighborhood park brings so many people together - and in a time when things are tough for so many! A big thanks to all the people in our community and Kaboom! Bring on construction in July!!!

Great news team!! Rob Baumgartner and I met with Edmonds City Council members this evening to talk about our project and formally request the funds for our playground project. We were told, "this is a no brainer" and will be put on the consent agenda for approval. The city completely supports our project. Another hurdle down and in the home stretch! On to the next fundraiser this Friday - 6pm-8pm Bingo/Silent Auction in the gym. Everyone is welcome!

The video is awesome, I think it shows exactly why Westgate Elementary deserves a new playground, our kids are playing in equipment that is as old as the school. Please help us reach our goals by supporting on any way you can.

I like the idea that Kaboom has suggested in creating learning opportunities for the students such as creating / painting a map of the US on the asphalt; however did not find anything useful in the link provided in the mile marker.

Students gave input in in the fall of 2009. I love the idea of each student drawing their dream playground. love the idea of trying to get a local grocer to print them up on shopping bags.

This is an awesome activity to get the kids excited about the new playground. Every student gets to draw their dream playground - anything goes! even a pool of M&M's. Great way to get them excited. Then post in hallways of school.

We are conducting a spring fundraising campaign to raise the remaining $55,000 deficit. First, we are applying for matching funds to the City of Edmonds for $25,000 and scheduled to make presentation to city council this month. We have set up a Paypal account on our school's website to accept direct donations. We are hosting several fundraising events including a bingo / silent auction on March 12 and wine / dessert tasting event on May 15. In addition to these events, all $ raised above the PSO general budget goal for our school's fun run, 4/30, will be put towards our playground deficit.
Candy Gaul, Karen Wolfe-Fritz and Rob Baumgartner have been in charge of fundraising and project planning. There are a number of people who have helped out in a variety of roles and ways that are not mentioned in this description.

Our project was initially conceived in 2006. Grants and fundraising began during this time. We had a projected budget, however from the initial projection to current, the equipment costs increased greater than 10%. Additionally, due to the poor economy, there is now limited government funding due to decreased tax revenues. Due to these factors, we are having to raise more than initially projected. We have a spring fundraising campaign to bring us close to our goal of $90,000.

We have very strong support from our parent community. Our demolition / build date should be completed by early July, 2010. As soon as we determine the build date (as dictated by our school district) we will release this to the community. Our school is registered with "Give a Day, Get a Day" program and we will use this to encourage participation. We hope to access volunteers through our regional Home Depot via the Kaboom program.

Representatives from each grade level, K-6, and Westgate staff were polled during the fall of 2009. The team considered their recommendations for design and equipment. Bids were received by Edmonds School District officials from a number of vendors. We are in the process of specifying the exact equipment pieces to be included in our play structure.

Training video gives good overview on need to provide opportunities for unstructured play: helps learning; fight obesity; creative outlet; teaches creativity and leadership.
Encourages community build project: complete volunteer building project in one day. Involving community raises public awareness, increases pride and ownership and saves $ (up to 30% cost of project goes towards the install).

We will renovate the playground this summer after fundraising for the last 4 years! Students and staff have given input on equipment and redesign. Our new playground will provide recreation and fitness opportunities for the students and the Westgate neighborhood. We are very excited to realize our dream this summer!
