We had a great turn out of volunteers for our build. We got it all done on time. The playground parts were assembled by teams of volunteers. They were put in place checked for accuracy and cemented in place. Was that a ton of cements or what? The wood chips were hauled all day by an army of volunteers who kept it going until it filled in under all the playground equipment. The wood cutouts were painted and attached to the fence They came out great very colorful to go the the playground. Benches were built and placed in the playground. A perfect place for parents to watch their kids play. Plants were organized and planted by our dedicated gardeners and volunteers. Two meals were served. We had many dedicated volunteers in the kitchen too! Volunteers painted all the benches and railing surrounding the play area as well as the fence in the back. It looks new again. Great job everyone.

I just watched the Mile Marker 2 webinar. In it I learned the importance of each of the Team Captains. These people need to be dedicated individuals that can be responsible for the various area on Build Day. The following are the teams for the build. Committee Co-Chairs, Children's Activities, Construction, Food, Fundraising, Logistics, Public Relations, Safety, and Volunteer Recruitment. Contact me if your are interested in participation as a team captain or member.

We are in the process of gathering all the people and groups that can help us in the Build. We are contacting many of the businesses in Westlake shopping center to donate food. Burgermeister will bring a truck out on "Prep Day" for Lunch on May 1st! We are working with other business for feeding our volunteers and getting tools for the Build on May 4th. If you have a connections or have an idea of who you think can help let us know. We are considering having a meeting to get through and finalizing these details. Comment here of contact us directly. Thanks

We are still gathering our volunteers. The list to the side does not reflex everyone that is coming. We have several groups and so far we have over 70 volunteers. Please sign up with KaBOOM and our project if you have not yet done so. Also get out the word and help us get more people signed up to volunteer for the big "Build" Day On May 4th. See you all there.

The old play structure is being removed as you can see from our photo page. Soon we will have the sand removed and the area will be prepared for the new structure. It is so awesome to see the progress we are making. Check out the photos. More to come in the days ahead.

Check it out everyone. We are on our way. I would like everyone to look at the KaBOOM toolkit. It has loads of information that our members need to get the job of building our playground done. There is step-by-step advice for our various planning committees on the potential challenges and pitfalls we might encounter. We don't have to reinvent the "wheel" as they say. Take advantage of the experience of others. The “Community Involvement” section has lots of information on assessing our assets. Assets are the skills, talents and gifts of the members of our community its individuals, associations, businesses and institutions. I have one question for everyone. Once we get the members of our community signed up to volunteer how do we keep them involved and active? We want as many as people as possible to show up on Build Day. Should we have some other activities between now and May 4th? If so what can we do to keep them involved. Here are my ideas. A Weekend family event at the park or Bring your own picnic. Please add your own ideas and what you are learning from the toolkit section or start a new discussion. Here are some links to the pages. http://kaboom.org/build_playspace/toolkit/volunteer_recruitment http://kaboom.org/build_playspace/toolkit/community_involvement

I watched the first webinar to complete our first mile marker. One of the most important things we need to know about kids is that play is vital to learning. It helps them get much needed exercise, growth of muscles, bones and physical coordination. It also allows them time for unstructured play where they can use their imaginations.

And this is why the work you're doing is so important and why I'm extremely excited about the work that you're doing. Please let me know if there is anything that I can do to help, and also let me know if you have any questions about the playground building process that I can answer.

We are so happy to be on our way to building our new playground. We need your help to make this build a super success. Join our team then tell your friends and family to join too. We need 150 people on build day May 4th. We want and need the support of our community. Don't be left our. We hope to see you there. Keep in touch and make your own journal entries.
