Do we just dig a bunch of holes and use a ruler?

When you first install Engineered Wood fiber it will not be fully compacted. However, with people walking on it, it compacts fairly quickly. The key though is to make sure the level of surfacing is at the sticker on the posts of the playground. Most manufactuers put a sticker on the post to designate where the surfacing level needs to be.

IMHO, stickers on the posts are not dependable. They may or may not have been installed at the perfect height and any slope at all across the area will cause some to be lower than others. I go with dig a bunch of holes and use a ruler... not such a big deal.

I would agree with both dflanigan and richleyhp. The stickers on the posts are a great guideline, but it never hurts to get out your hand trow and ruler to see how deep the EWF is! This is also a great activity for kids who are learning about depth, or safety, or volume! Get the kids invoveled and have them do a diagram or chart of where they took their measurements and what the depths are! Be sure to do this often and check all areas of the playground (especially under equipment that is well-loved like swings and slides)!
