Balloon Launch - Wednesday, April 30, 2008
Up, Up & Away Published on: Apl 30, 2008 Photo by Russ McKee
Several hundred people made their way to Coleman Park Sunday for a balloon launch and information on the Money for Monkeys fund raising drive, headed up by 10-year-old Landon Bradley of Wellman, to place an impressive playground in the park. The $280,000 facility will be completely handicapped-accessible and will be paid for without tax dollars. The site in the park, south of the RV parking, was donated for the playground. Sunday’s balloon launch raised more than $400.

Desire sets 10-year-old on $280,000 playground mission Published on: Apl 23, 2008
Landon Bradley, a Wellman-Union fifth grader looks over a drawing of the new playground set for construction in Coleman Park next year. A 1,000-balloon launch is set for 3 p.m. Sunday as one of many fund raisers to earn the $280,000 necessary to build the impressive structure without any burden on local tax payers. Tickets for the launch are $1 and will be for sale at United Supermarket and at the Little League opening day on Saturday. Any size donation will be accepted. When 10-year-old Landon Bradley moved to the area, he was disappointed with the playgrounds available for kids to run and play in city and county parks. But rather than complain or head inside for hours of video games, the Wellman-Union fifth grader set out to do something about it. With some help from his parents and grandparents, but largely on his own, Landon set out to put together a 4-H project that will benefit the children and families of Terry County for decades to come. The result is “Money for Monkeys” -- a grass-roots fund raising effort with a lofty, but attainable goal of locating a top-of-the-line playground in Coleman Park. That vision you might have of a few horizontal bars and a hot metal slide couldn’t be farther from the image Landon had, or the concept he’s presented for the design. The new playground, with help from local citizens, businesses and organizations, will be a $280,000 gem in the city’s largest park. The money will come through fund-raising efforts, contributions from area businesses, government grants and donations from private citizens and civic groups. One of those fund raisers will take place Sunday at the future site of the playground. All Terry County elementary students are invited to launch more than 1,000 helium

BROWNFIELD NEWS
10-year-old boy raises money for new playground Published on: Dec 15, 2007
Terry County extension agent Mary Collier gives a donation to Landon Bradley, 10. Landon is raising money for new playground equipment in Brownfield.
Some kids wish their neighborhood had a better park.
But Landon Bradley, 10, decided to build one.
Landon’s project, Money 4 Monkeys Playground Fund, has raised slightly more than $10,000 so far to build a playground in Coleman Park similar to that in Lubbock’s Legacy Park.
“When I moved here I noticed the park up here wasn’t really accessible for kids,” Landon said.
Landon said he wants to build a park that is “kind of small in some parts and big for older kids and [has] a little playground beside it for children with disabilities.”
Money 4 Monkeys is still about $50,000 short of its goal. Fundraisers have been earning money by collecting empty ink cartridges and old cell phones to recycle. They also had a booth at the Harvest Festival.
“I’ve been giving presentations and getting a lot of support,” Landon said. “People have been giving money for it.”
Coordinators of the playground project are taking its development one step at a time.
“I think in June or July we could have enough money raised that we can start getting an architect’s drawing,” said Terry County extension agent Mary Collier. “From start to finish [it should take] 18 months.”
Collier is confident that Brownfield City Council will allow them to put the new playground equipment in Coleman Park, or at least somewhere else in Brownfield.
“They’re interested in making us better,” she said. “If we raise the money, they will give us a place for the park.”

Welcome to our Project Page.

We are so thankful that you are interested in jumping on board to help us meet our goal of building a new, attractive and safe playground in Terry County that is accessible for all the children of our county including toddler –twelve and children with disabilities. We are committed to making Brownfield a better place to live and raise a family. Our ultimate goal is to raise enough money to have a 112’ x 84’ playground where you can relax, play, have parties and bring the community together. We love the kids of Terry County and the families that support them.
Please check back often to view our progress.
