Martin Behrman Charter Elementary School is part of the Algiers Charter School Association and is located in the historic Algiers Point neighborhood on the West Bank of New Orleans. The Martin Behrman Charter Family is committed to educating a diverse community to become life-long learners.
Most of the students at Behrman Charter were uprooted following Hurricane Katrina. In the re-organization of the schools in the Algiers Charter District, Behrman Charter became a Pre-K through 8th grade school, educating students from all areas of New Orleans. Previously it had been Pre-K through 6th.
Currently Behrman Charter serves a total of 578 students from all over New Orleans. 97% of these students qualify for the Free & Reduced Priced Lunch program.
Parent participation has been extremely strong in a variety of Behrman Charter programs, including open houses, parent conferences, math night, graduations, mother/daughter breakfast, father/son breakfast, grandparents day, parent talk, father/son car wash, awards ceremonies, morning duty, and other special events. The community has contributed to the school in the form of paint groups and donations of school supplies. Behrman Charter has an existing relationship with Engineers Without Borders, and this group will assist with site preparation and general manpower for this playground project.
