Welcome
Welcome to the Martin Behrman Charter Elementary School Playground Page

Build Date: February 13, 2007

Welcome to our home page!  We're so glad you dropped by. Come back often to check on our progress, and learn how you can volunteer to help us make the kids' dream a reality.

The community of Algiers was severely impacted by Hurricane Katrina.  While the hurricane did not cause the flooding that the majority of the city received, Algiers was hit hard by the tremendous winds.  The school’s roof and auditorium were damaged, and the gymnasium was not usable for an extended amount of time, but all have now been fixed with the help of FEMA.  As one of the few dry areas in the city, families have migrated to this community to live with relatives or friends or to make Algiers their new permanent home.  When Behrman Charter opened, there were students in all sorts of educational condition, from those who had been attending school since right after the storm to those who had not been fortunate enough to attend school for months.  Dealing with this has been a great challenge for the school.  There are few areas for students to enjoy recess, and with the increase in enrolled students since Hurricane Katrina, there is a huge need for additional and enhanced recreational facilities in order to be able to serve all the children. This playground project will significantly increase the opportunities for these children to play.

More About Our Project Minimize

Martin Behrman Charter Elementary School is part of the Algiers Charter School Association and is located in the historic Algiers Point neighborhood on the West Bank of New Orleans.  The Martin Behrman Charter Family is committed to educating a diverse community to become life-long learners.

Most of the students at Behrman Charter were uprooted following Hurricane Katrina. In the re-organization of the schools in the Algiers Charter District, Behrman Charter became a Pre-K through 8th grade school, educating students from all areas of New Orleans.  Previously it had been Pre-K through 6th.

Currently Behrman Charter serves a total of 578 students from all over New Orleans. 97% of these students qualify for the Free & Reduced Priced Lunch program.

Parent participation has been extremely strong in a variety of Behrman Charter programs, including open houses, parent conferences, math night, graduations, mother/daughter breakfast, father/son breakfast, grandparents day, parent talk, father/son car wash, awards ceremonies, morning duty, and other special events.  The community has contributed to the school in the form of paint groups and donations of school supplies.  Behrman Charter has an existing relationship with Engineers Without Borders, and this group will assist with site preparation and general manpower for this playground project.
