Playground Design Day - Saturday, May 26, 2007
Approximately 30 children shared their visions of their dream playground at a Playground Design Day event on Monday, April 9 at the Long Lines Family Rec Center. JLSC hosted the event as a way to generate ideas from children about how to transform the existing Chris Larsen Park playground into an attractive, modern playspace. The children’s drawings will be used by the project committee to create the playground’s final design. "By holding the Playground Design Day during spring break and at the Long Lines Center, we had hoped to receive the input of a cross-section of our children in our community. We met our goal by having children from Morningside, the Westside, and the Northside,"” said Mary Green-Warnstadt, 2006-07 Chris Larsen Park Playground project chair.

JLSC Done-In A Day
Because the JLSC committee thought it was important to address some of the cosmetic and safety issues as soon as possible, a Done-In-A-Day event was held at the park in September 2006. Forty-five JLSC volunteers painted the existing park equipment to improve its appearance. In addition, the volunteers applied temporary mulch safety surfacing to the playground area.

The goal of the project is to create a playground where all children, including ones with special needs can play together. Expansion of the existing space, new surfacing and curbing, and the equipment itself will be selected with this goal in mind. The new equipment will include specialized accessories and structures for children with special needs so that all children, regardless of ability, will be able to enjoy this park together.
The current playground area has unattractive, broken and dated equipment and an adjacent drainage area that is a potential safety hazard for young children. The Chris Larsen Park Playground Project will harness community resources and private funds in partnership with the City of Sioux City to get the most impact for the time and funds invested.
Proposed Site
The Chris Larsen Park Playground Project was developed by the JLSC to expand the playground area next to the Chris Larsen Park Shelter House and install updated equipment. Positioned off the I-29 exit between the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center (LCIC) and an Interstate Rest Stop and the Sergeant Floyd River Museum & Welcome Center, the Chris Larsen Park Playground is in a high traffic area serving both out-of-town visitors and local residents.
Timeline
A Playground Design Day was held April 9, 2007 to gather the input of youth in our community. JLSC will initiate a volunteer recruitment drive in July and August for the September 15th Build Day.
