Benjamin Franklin Elementary Mathematics and Science School is a public school in New Orleans. The vision of Benjamin Franklin Elementary Mathematics and Science School is to accelerate the learning of all students through data driven inquiry, reflective teaching, and powerful learning. Currently Benjamin Franklin serves 481 students who are drawn form all areas of the city including the West Bank. Approximately 40% of our students arrive on school buses . Benjamin Franklin serves a high needs population, with the reported average annual income of families at the school being approximately $15,000 with 91 of our students are currently homeless.
In order to promote a well-rounded individual, the school seeks to enable students to interact with one another in formal and informal play. The present schoolyard is covered with decaying blacktop surface. 90% of the injuries that are sustained at school are a result of students running on this surface. Removing a major part of the surface and turning it into an interactive playground would not only meet the play needs of the students but would increase the safety factor of the school yard.
Benjamin Franklin has an enthusiastic principal and active PTO organization. A new playground has been the topic of conversation at PTO meetings for some time now. Parents are 100% behind a playground project and have a capacity to network. In talking with the parents about the prospects of a playground project and the volunteer commitment the general response is, “Just tell me when”. Beyond parent and staff support there are several supporting organizations including local universities and service organizations.
