Edith Cavell Elementary School’s Build Day took place on August 23rd, 2007. What a fantastic day it was! Being part of this community effort was definitely a highlight of the summer. With over 300 people in attendance, 87 Home Depot volunteers, 138 volunteers from the community and 105 children there was so much energy and excitement!
The KaBOOM! Team arrived at 6:00am to help in anyway they could to make our children's dream become a reality. Soon after volunteers started arriving from Home Depot’s Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond and Langley stores, as well as people from the local community to lend a helping hand. Not only did they pitch-in to build the playground but landscaping was done and a mural was painted as well. In addition to construction, volunteers gladly helped direct traffic, serve food, oversee registration, fix minor cuts and provide children activities that included painting wooden daisies, mosaic tiles, and practised a cheer for the closing ceremonies. Local youth served as DJ’s; providing great tunes to keep the crowd going. The TV and print media were in attendance to cover the day's activities.

Here’s what some of the volunteers had to say:
“"This is a really great event. We need to have more of these where people come out and meet one another."
"During the closing ceremonies all you could see were smiles, and there was this huge feeling of pride and accomplishment. It was a special day!"
"While its fabulous to have a new playground, the thing that everyone will remember is the sense of community and coming together."
"It was a great day for our whole family. It made me wonder why we don't come together as a community more often. You know what they say, it takes a village to raise a child; and our village just got a lot better!"
WE TRULY WANT TO THANK EVERYONE INVOLVED FOR UNSELFISHLY GIVING THEIR TIME AND EFFORTS TO HELP MAKE THIS DAY A GREAT SUCCESS!
