DE L’EPEE DEAF CENTER
Operation Playground: Rebuilding Playgrounds. Restoring Childhoods.
Community Quotes Minimize

I am the parent of a deaf child who just recently graduated high school.  I know the challenges of finding a safe place for a hearing impaired child.  They do not hear the car horns or people yelling.  De l’Epee would be a safe, secure, easily accessible place for parents of all, both hearing and deaf, to bring their children.

I speak for many of the parents in our community when I say; we wholeheartedly support KaBOOM! working with de l’Epee Deaf Center to created a playground on their site.  What a great opportunity to enrich the futures of our children.

Double the impact of your donation to de l'Epee Deaf Center!

In an effort to inspire others to contribute, a Mississippi donor has pledged $500,000 to support Operation Playground: Rebuilding Playgrounds, Restoring Childhoods, a new two-year KaBOOM! initiative to build 100 playgrounds in Gulf Coast communities affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Thanks to the $500,000 gift, donations to Operation Playground made before the one year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina on August 29, will be matched dollar for dollar, raising up to $1 million for the initiative.

Welcome
The de l’Epee Deaf Center

The de l’Epee Deaf Center is a well-known and well-respected base of operations for the Deaf, Hard of Hearing or Disabled community in Mississippi.  A ministry of the Diocese of Biloxi, the Center provides spiritual well-being and a safe, happy and fun environment for the approximately 135 children it serves.  Volunteers and Staff at de l’Epee know the truth of Helen Keller’s statement that whereas blindness separated one from things, deafness sets one apart from the sharing of thoughts and ideas.  The Center aims to give Deaf children as many experiences as possible that will allow them to be on par with hearing children, beginning with their own brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers.  de l’Epee Deaf Center is considered the “Hub” of all Deaf activities in Southern Mississippi and is frequented not just by children also their aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, neighbors, teachers and interpreters.

The current playground structure at de l’Epee is consists of two swings and a small slide and does not meet the needs of the Center and the children it serves.  Although the Center was not hard-hit by Katrina, staff there expects an increase in population due to the families who have relocated to the area and will need a safe place for there children to play.  A playground at the de l’Epee Deaf Center will provide a safe place to play for kids, both hearing and Deaf, to play and will help bridge the gap between children with disabilities and those without.
