Welcome to the Coulter Playground Project
Welcome to our page and thanks for stopping by! Come back often to check the progress of our project as well as learn how you can volunteer to help make our project become a reality!
Why: During two neighborhood meetings held on August 2nd and 9th, 2007, a total of 65 residents and residential property owners discussed their neighborhood; the Coulter Plan. The attendees were asked to share their thoughts and opinions concerning the positive aspects, the negative aspects, evolution of the neighborhood, and specific initiatives needed to improve and strengthen the Coulter Plan. The attendees agreed the Coulter Playground was a key element of the neighborhood and a space they valued. They also agreed the park is not being used to the full potential. The attendees stated the community could work with the City to improve the Coulter Playground.
Who: The GCDC and the City consider the Coulter Playground as a neighborhood park serving the residents within a ¼mile radius of the park (including the neighborhoods of Coulter Plan, Academy Hill, Shuey Plan, and Rose Fountain along with Seton Hill University). Based on the 2000 Census Bureau Data for census track 8039, approximately 9,000 people live within walking distance to the park. The population is fairly balanced between four life stages: Children & Teenagers (24.6%), Generations Y & X (33.9%), Boomers (23.3%), and Seniors (18.3%). Residents within each life stage use the Coulter Playground differently. Children and grandchildren use the gym equipment. Teenagers, college students, and basketball players use the court. Pet owners walk their dog in the park. Residents appreciating the natural elements enjoy walking in the grass, sitting on the bench, and watching the birds.
What Impact: With the residents planning, designing, and directing the improvements to the Coulter Playground, the improved park will better meet their recreational needs, become an even more important element of their neighborhood, and serve as a project to strengthen interpersonal relationships between the residents. The Coulter Playground will become a benefit of living in the neighborhood.
