When a child is playing, he or she is distracted from the environment and lost in a world of imagination and fun.  In an environment where children are continually exposed to situations that they are not mature enough to fully understand, I believe it is important to give our children every opportunity to remain children.

In an effort to inspire others to contribute, a Mississippi donor has pledged $500,000 to support Operation Playground: Rebuilding Playgrounds, Restoring Childhoods, a new two-year KaBOOM! initiative to build 100 playgrounds in Gulf Coast communities affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Thanks to the $500,000 gift, donations to Operation Playground made before the one year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina on August 29, will be matched dollar for dollar, raising up to $1 million for the initiative.

Welcome
Carolyn Park Middle School

Hurricane Katrina had a major impact on Slidell, Louisiana and the students of Carolyn Park Middle School. The storm not only claimed homes and possessions, it claimed a sense of security and forced families to shelters or the homes of loved ones for months after the Hurricane. Students returned to school in October of 2005 without school supplies, uniforms or textbooks.  However, Hurricane Katrina has also left Slidell with a sense of hope for a better future and forced them to become a united community; a community who suffered losses together and together will rebuild.

Since it re-opened in October of 2005, Carolyn Park Middle School has enrolled or re-enrolled approximately 130 new or returning students.  The school administration expects the number to continue to increase as homes are rebuilt and families relocate to Slidell from parishes affected by Hurricane Katrina.  Since Hurricane Katrina, St. Tammany Parish has had a population growth of 100,000 people.

Dear Kaboom,

I am Emily Ruppel and a 4th grade student at Carolyn Park Middle School. I'd really, really like a playground for 2 reasons: 1) We hardly have ANY equipment, just a rusty old basket-ball court and 2 old metal slides. We have balls and cones, but it's not too much fun. 2.) Having playground equipment will give us something to do and then we'd be happy. Thank you for everything you have done and might do.

Signed with Hope,

Emily
